What is Swedish Massage?

Swedish massage is a whole-body therapeutic massage treatment that works the soft tissues and muscles to help restore health - creating a calming and balancing effect on the nervous system. A massage therapist will use five main types of massage techniques in a Swedish massage: stroking and gliding; kneading; rubbing; tapping or pounding; vibration.

What are the benefits?

Swedish massage techniques are designed to improve your circulation, soothe your muscles and make you feel more relaxed. Unlike deep tissue massage, Swedish massage uses softer strokes on the bonier and more delicate parts of the body, and stronger strokes where there is thicker muscle coverage. This adjustment of pressure makes it an ideal massage for relaxation. Best known for soothing tight muscles and boosting wellbeing, Swedish massage also offers a range of other health benefits, including:

  • easing muscular strain by flushing out toxins
  • improving blood circulation and flow throughout the body
  • helping to keep ligaments and tendons supple and improving range of motion
  • reducing emotional and physical stress
  • easing back pain and chronic pain

What can I expect during a treatment?

If you are new to Swedish Massage or you are new to treatments with me, to ensure your treatment is safe and tailored to your specific needs you will be required to complete a detailed health and lifestyle consultation. This can be carried out prior to your appointment or at the beginning of your first appointment, we will discuss this during the booking process and allocate time accordingly. The consultation will usually take no longer than 15 minutes to complete and comes at no extra cost to you.

Depending on the massage you have chosen it will last between 30 to 90 minutes. I recommend that you wear loose comfortable clothing that you are not worried about getting oils on, to attend your appointment with me. You will be asked to undress accordingly depending on the massage you have chosen and lie down under a soft blanket on my cosy heated massage table where I will use props to support you. Rest assured that you will never be completely exposed at any point; you will be covered appropriately throughout with only the area of focus being worked upon. If you're worried about anything at all, please don't hesitate to ask.

I have a choice of beautiful, natural and organic essential oil massage blends for you to choose from so we will discuss your needs and skin type and I will advise accordingly so that you gain maximum relaxation from your massage. I will begin by applying the oil chosen with long gentle, gliding strokes to help you sink into a state of relaxation and will then move on to using a series of strokes and techniques specific to the part of your body and what you want to achieve. Swedish massage takes into account the delicate or tender areas of your body, so it should be comfortable and soothing not painful. Being content in your surroundings is important for relaxation and will help you sink happily into your massage, therefore if there is anything you don't feel comfortable with please let me know. Some clients like to chat a bit; others don't. It really doesn't matter as long as you're comfortable, relaxed and receptive.

What is Indian Head Massage?

Indian Head massage is an ancient Ayurvedic technique that focuses on massaging acupressure points along the face, scalp, neck, upper body, shoulders and arms. Working with the physical, emotional and spiritual energy levels; balancing chakras to restore equilibrium within the energy flow. The perfect way to allow tension to drift away and regain balance, harmony and a sense of wellbeing.

What are the benefits?

This form of massage focuses on the three higher "chakras" - mind, body and spirit, focussing on balancing your energy epicentre. It can be incredibly relaxing, make you feel serene and as though you could float away, but also alert and clear-headed, alleviating brain-fog and stress. Not only does it leave you feeling deeply relaxed there are also many other benefits:

  • relieve aches, pains and tension in your neck, back and shoulders
  • stimulating the hair follicles is said to improve the texture of your hair and encourage hair growth
  • relieve stress and help you sleep better
  • stimulates blood flow, lymph and oxygen in your upper body
  • relieve sinusitis, headaches (even migraine), eye strain and anxiety
  • improves concentration

An Indian Head Massage usually lasts approximately 45 minutes. I recommend that you wear loose comfortable clothing that you are not worried about getting oils on, to attend your appointment with me. Traditionally Indian Head Massage is carried out seated in a chair but can also be performed lying down, at the time of booking I will ask you for your preference. You will be asked to undress to your waist and depending on your preference, either sit in the chair wrapped in a snuggly blanket or to lie down under a soft blanket on my cosy heated massage table where I will use props to support you. Rest assured that you won't be exposed at any point. If you're worried about anything at all, please don't hesitate to ask.

I have a choice of beautiful, natural and organic essential oil massage blends for you to choose from so we will discuss your needs and skin type and I will advise accordingly so that you gain maximum relaxation from your massage. I will then use a series of massage techniques specific to that part of your body to relax and balance your energies. Indian Head Massage should be incredibly relaxing even more so than a Swedish Massage, I always use comfortable pressures and soothing techniques which should not feel painful. Being content in your surroundings is important for relaxation and will help you sink happily into your massage, therefore if there is anything you don't feel comfortable with please let me know. Generally, during an Indian Head Massage clients like to completely zone out but it really is up to you if you feel you would like to chat or not. As long as you're comfortable, relaxed and receptive I will happily be guided by you.

The heat of the stones and the rhythmical flow of the massage, melt away tension and stress, allowing you to surrender to a state of deep relaxation. Their radiant heat infiltrates deeply into tired muscles, easing away knots and promoting an intense sense of wellbeing.

Aftercare Advice for Massage

Afterwards, it is likely that you will feel quite relaxed and perhaps even sleepy, so please make sure to give yourself plenty of time to re-adjust. Please try your best to follow the aftercare advice to maximise the effects of your treatment:

  • rest for at least an hour after treatment
  • drink plenty of water or herbal teas to keep the body fully hydrated and functions working to their full potential
  • avoid caffeinated drinks and alcohol for at least 24 hours as these act as a stimulant to the body and do not promote relaxation
  • eat a light and healthy diet to allow your body to put its energy into wellbeing
  • avoid any strenuous activities immediately after the session, keep any movement light and gentle
  • avoid hot baths or saunas immediately after a hot stone therapy massage, as your body has already experienced increased heat
  • pay close attention to how your body is feeling after the massage. If you have any concerns or questions about your post massage care, get in touch with Michelle for guidance and support.
