Congratulations!

Pregnancy and childbirth is a very special and exciting time, a time where taking care of yourself and your little miracle is so important. It is through my own pregnancies that I fell in love with the therapy of Reflexology and I will be honoured to offer you some much needed relaxation during your pregnancy and postnatal journey.

What is Maternity Reflexology?

Maternity Reflexology is a specialist area of Reflexology aimed specifically at women during pre-conception, pregnancy, labour and the postnatal periods. Having regular reflexology during conception, pregnancy and following the birth can offer many benefits:

  • encourages deep relaxation
  • reduces anxiety
  • reduces any feelings of stress
  • improves quality of sleep

Reflexology can be used safely throughout pregnancy. Treatments provide a safe, confidential space where you can take time to connect with your baby, clear your mind and talk things through.

Once you are made comfortable, treatment will commence with a relaxing foot massage followed by gentle pressure applied to reflex points all over the foot corresponding to each body part.

What happens during a Maternity Reflexology treatment?

As a maternity reflexologist I work in a complementary way alongside your midwife (your main healthcare provider during pregnancy) and will ask you to acquire permission before reflexology treatments commence. We will begin your first session by completing a detailed medical history and lifestyle consultation which will ensure that it is safe to proceed with your reflexology treatments and allow me to tailor your treatment to your needs.

During the first trimester, when hormone levels fluctuate hugely I will focus on aiding your relaxation, reducing your stress levels and offer invaluable support. During the second and third trimester, when sometimes more physical symptoms can occur reflexology can help to support you through these different stages. Running up to birth more frequent visits can help to calm your anxieties and relax your body to prepare for labour. Post birth where you are facing the new and exciting challenges of motherhood can also be supported with reflexology, encouraging better quality sleep making you feel better able to cope with the ups and downs you may face.

We will begin your treatment by making you comfortable on my heated couch with props and pillows to support you. Your treatment will commence with a relaxing foot massage where I will use a beautiful organic maternity foot balm on your feet produced by Flying Wild, following this I will begin to gently apply pressure to the specific reflex points all over the foot and you will begin to feel your stress and anxieties float away.

Many of my clients like to be quiet and peaceful during their treatment and some like to talk, I will always be guided by you, it is your session and I want you to feel as comfortable as possible and get the most from it. It is also common for clients to fall asleep; this is completely normal and a fantastic way for any mummy-to-be to gain some much needed rest. You will be offered a glass of filtered water, and you will have time to ask any questions about your session. Reflexology is a truly relaxing and supportive treatment during pregnancy, and many of my clients leave my treatment room feeling refreshed and relaxed.

Maternity reflexology is a wonderful complementary treatment for pregnant clients and is not a substitute for medical and obstetric care. If you are concerned about your health, please always consult your GP and Midwife first.

What is Postnatal Reflexology?

Postnatal Reflexology is a specialist area of Reflexology aimed specifically at women during the postnatal journey where sometimes the importance of looking after a new mummy can get overlooked.

Having regular reflexology following the birth can offer many benefits:

  • aids the body's own healing process
  • balances or stimulates hormones e.g. prolactin for breastfeeding or to ease the transition if you're not.
  • promotes healthy flow of digestive and lymphatic systems by calming parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system
  • encourages deep relaxation at a demanding time
  • reduces any feelings of stress or anxiety
  • improves quality of sleep for when you can grab a few restful moments

Reflexology can be used safely postnatally. Treatments provide a safe, confidential space where you can take time to connect with your newborn baby, clear your mind and talk things through. If you are local to me I can even come to you in the early days to deliver your treatment in the comfort of your own home. Better still, if you've had a block booking with me throughout your pregnancy journey then you will receive your first postnatal treatment FREE within the first 4 weeks after the birth!

If you're worried about leaving baby, there's no need as he/she is welcome to come with you where you can both enjoy the peaceful relaxation and drop off into a beautiful slumber together. Once you are both safe and comfortable, treatment will commence with a relaxing foot massage followed by gentle pressure applied to reflex points all over the foot corresponding to each body part.

We will begin your first session by completing a detailed medical history and lifestyle consultation which will ensure that it is safe to proceed with your reflexology treatments and allow me to tailor your treatment to your needs.

During the fourth trimester, when hormone levels fluctuate hugely as your body begins to recover from the birth and acclimatise to this demanding stage, I will focus on balancing your hormones, digestive and lymphatics system; aiding your relaxation, reducing your stress levels and offer invaluable support in those early days.

If you are visiting my treatment room we will begin your treatment by making you comfortable on my heated couch with props and pillows to support you where necessary. What is Pregnancy Massage?

Pregnancy Massage is a specialist adaptation of Swedish Massage aimed specifically at women during pregnancy and post pregnancy.

Prenatal massage can help to:

  • improve circulation, and increase the flow of oxygen to soft tissue and muscles
  • reduce leg and back pain and joint pain
  • reduce oedema (water retention) and swelling
  • improve sleep
  • improve mood and lower anxiety
  • regulate hormones, such as helping to decrease levels of stress hormones and increase "happy" hormones such as serotonin and dopamine
  • reduce muscle tension, and tension headaches

Postnatal massage can help to:

  • support the body's recovery by working on the blood and lymphatic systems, which promote healing and bring the body back into equilibrium.
  • reduce the feeling of heaviness and exhaustion as the body adjusts to hormonal changes
  • aid the recovery of muscle tone in the abdominal and pelvic areas
  • provide nurturance and a little 'time out' for the mother
  • provide a safe space to express any fears or negative experiences
  • gives emotional support at a time when most women are feeling anxious, exhausted and possibly mildly depressed
  • encourage the release of oxytocin to lift mood

When is it safe to enjoy a Pregnancy Massage?

It is considered safe and beneficial to receive a pregnancy massage throughout all stages of your pregnancy provided that there are no threats to the pregnancy. If you are suffering from nausea or vomiting, have a high-risk pregnancy or have previous experience of placental abruption, miscarriage or pre-term labour, or you have pre-eclampsia or hypertension it is best to avoid massage. If you are at all concerned then please speak to your midwife or GP to check if it is safe to have a massage.

What happens during a treatment?

As a holistic therapist I work in a complementary way alongside your midwife (your main healthcare provider during pregnancy) and will ask you to acquire permission before any treatments commence. We will begin your first session by completing a detailed medical history and lifestyle consultation which will ensure that it is safe to proceed with your massage treatment and allow me to tailor your treatment to your needs.

We will begin your treatment by making you comfortable on my comfy couch with props and pillows to support you. The vena cava is a large blood vessel to your heart, which lies along the back wall of your abdomen, next to your spine. Lying on your back in the later stages of pregnancy can put undue pressure on this area, so it is more comfortable to lie on your side, both when you sleep, and when you have a massage. During pregnancy, your blood volume can increase by up to 50 per cent and, in turn, anticoagulant levels increase. This means that you are more at risk of blood clots, particularly in your thighs and calves. For this reason, I will not include any deep-tissue massage strokes in areas such as the legs. I will use Swedish massage techniques throughout, which comprise of gliding strokes and gentle kneading designed to improve your blood and lymphatic circulation, soothe your muscles and make you more relaxed.

Many of my clients like to be quiet and peaceful during their treatment and some like to talk, I will always be guided by you, it is your session and I want you to feel as comfortable as possible and get the most from it. A massage is a perfect way for any mummy-to-be or new mummy to gain some much needed rest but please do let me know if you become uncomfortable or need to visit the bathroom, I want you to gain as much relaxation as possible from your treatment. You will be offered a glass of filtered water, and you will have time to ask any questions about your session. Massage is an incredibly relaxing treatment during pregnancy and postnatally, and many of my clients leave my treatment room feeling refreshed and relaxed.

Pregnancy/Postnatal Massage is a wonderful complementary treatment for pregnant clients and is not a substitute for medical and obstetric care. If you are concerned about your health, please always consult your GP, Midwife and Health Visitor first.

Aftercare Advice for Maternity & Postnatal Reflexology & Massage

Afterwards, it is likely that you will feel quite relaxed and perhaps even sleepy, so please make sure to give yourself plenty of time to re-adjust. Please try your best to follow the aftercare advice to maximise the effects of your treatment:

  • rest for at least an hour after treatment
  • drink plenty of water or herbal teas to keep the body fully hydrated and functions working to their full potential
  • avoid caffeinated drinks and alcohol for at least 24 hours as these act as a stimulant to the body and do not promote relaxation
  • eat a light and healthy diet to allow your body to put its energy into wellbeing
