REFLEXOLOGY

Reflexology is traditionally performed by using specific techniques to apply pressure to reflex points on the feet, hands or face. To a Reflexologist your feet, hands & face are a map of your entire body!

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a unique complementary therapy that is recognised by the NHS, many GPs and hospices. It is based on the theory that there are reflex points on the feet, hands and face linked to every part of the body. Each part of the body is operated by messages carried back and forth along neural pathways. These pathways can become impaired due to many things such as stress and illness. Stimulating these reflex points can lead to improved circulation, decreased tension and the elimination of toxins, encouraging the body to rebalance itself towards optimum health.

Reflexology can be traced back to 2330 BC in ancient Egypt and also in India and China. Reflexology as we know it today is attributed to the work of Eunice Ingham, an American therapist who mapped reflex points on the feet and hands corresponding to all organs, glands and parts of the body. For example, the toes represent the head, and the ball of the foot represents the chest and lung area.

A Reflexologist will use a mixture of massage and specialised techniques to apply gentle pressure to the reflex areas on the feet, hands or face to encourage a state of deep relaxation allowing the stimulation of the body's own natural healing processes. It is the perfect way to gain balance, harmony and a sense of wellbeing in body, mind and spirit.

Take a look at the interactive foot and hand maps below to gain an insight into what a Reflexologist sees when they work on your feet or hands.

What are the benefits?

Our health depends on all the thousands of parts of our body and mind working in harmony together. Increased strain on a particular area can send our whole system out of balance. A reflexology treatment is designed to rebalance, restore and cleanse the body to encourage the whole body to restore harmony and create a sense of wellbeing.

Reflexology can:

  • aid deep relaxation
  • release tension
  • improve the quality of sleep
  • uplift mood
  • encourage self-healing
  • promote general wellbeing

What can I expect during a treatment?

If you are new to Reflexology or you are new to treatments with me, to ensure your treatment is safe and tailored to your specific needs you will be required to complete a detailed health and lifestyle consultation. This can be carried out prior to your appointment or at the beginning of your first appointment, we will discuss this during the booking process and allocate time accordingly. The consultation will usually take no longer than 15 minutes to complete and comes at no extra cost to you.

Foot Reflexology:

I recommend that you wear loose comfortable clothing to attend your appointment with me. You will remain fully clothed but will be asked to remove your shoes and socks and roll up any long trousers up to the knee. You can then make yourself comfortable on my heated reflexology couch where I will use props and pillows to support you, ensuring you gain maximum relaxation from the very beginning.

Your treatment will begin with a cleanse of the feet using hot towels and followed by a relaxing foot massage and then the application of gentle pressure to the specific reflex areas all over the feet. Any areas of tension will be recorded during the treatment and shared with you at the end if you wish to be informed. Appointments usually last between 50-90 minutes depending on the treatment chosen.

Hand Reflexology:

I recommend that you wear loose comfortable clothing including a short sleeved t-shirt or vest to attend your appointment with me. You will remain fully clothed but will be asked to remove your shoes and roll up any tops up to the shoulder. You can then make yourself comfortable on my heated reflexology couch where I will use props and pillows to support you, ensuring you gain maximum relaxation from the very beginning.

Your treatment will begin with a cleanse of the hands and arms using hot towels, followed by a relaxing hand and arm massage and then the application of gentle pressure to the specific reflex areas all over the hands. Any areas of tension will be recorded during the treatment and shared with you at the end if you wish to be informed. Appointments are approximately 45 minutes in duration but can be tailored to your individual needs.

Signature Face Reflexology:

I recommend that you wear loose comfortable clothing to attend your appointment with me. To gain maximum benefit from your treatment you will be asked to remove your top half of clothing down to your underwear and a cosy blanket will be provided for your modesty. You can then make yourself comfortable on my heated reflexology couch where I will use props and pillows to support you, ensuring you are completely comfortable for your treatment to begin.

Your treatment will begin with a facial cleanse using a natural cleansing oil and hot towels. A gentle massage using a nourishing facial oil prepares the facial muscles for relaxation and allows the body to move into a healing state. Gentle pressure will then be applied to each specific reflex point across the face and acupressure points tailored to your needs will close this section of the treatment. A calming ritual of Gua Sha massage will follow to ease away stress & tension, smooth, lift & plump the skin, increase circulation, encourage lymphatic flow leaving a dewy, glowing complexion. Finally, you will enjoy an uninterrupted 10 minutes with a beautifully scented, heated eye mask to allow your body to rest after your treatment. Any areas of tension will be recorded during the treatment and discussed with you at the end. Appointments are approximately 70 minutes in duration but can be tailored to your individual needs.

How many sessions are needed?

The choice is yours! A one-off treatment can be deeply relaxing but a course of 6 treatments is incredibly beneficial to restore balance across the body and mind. Following this, a maintenance programme can be designed to suit your individual needs to maintain a lasting effect of health and wellbeing both mentally and physically.

The recommended interval between treatments is a minimum of 1 week and a maximum of 4 weeks to ensure treatments can take their full effect.

How will I feel after a treatment?

As Reflexology works by encouraging the body to correct any imbalances naturally, following your treatment you may or may not experience a healing response, this indicates the body is healing and ridding any toxins that may have built up. Please do not be alarmed if you experience any of the following:

  • worsening symptoms
  • increased urination and bowel movements
  • improved sleep patterns or restlessness
  • vivid dreams
  • increase in perspiration
  • potential headaches (if prone)
  • increased energy levels or more lethargic and tired
  • heightened emotions (tearful, down or elated)
  • cold-like symptoms (feverish, cough, sore throat)
  • feeling irritable or restless
  • increased thirst
  • nausea or dizziness

These symptoms are temporary and should only last for 24-48 hours, a general sense of wellbeing will follow.

Aftercare advice:

Reflexology is a holistic therapy meaning it considers the whole person's body, mind, spirit and emotions. Please try your best to follow the aftercare advice to maximise the effects of your treatment.

To gain the most from your treatment it is advised that you:

  • rest for at least an hour after treatment to enable your body to continue the healing process
  • drink plenty of water or herbal teas to keep the body fully hydrated and functions working to their full potential
  • avoid caffeinated drinks and alcohol for at least 24 hours as these act as a stimulant to the body and do not promote relaxation
  • eat a light and healthy diet to allow your body to put its energy into wellbeing
